Leonard Cohen took home the Glenn Gould Prize last night at a star-studded ceremony at Toronto’s Massey Hall. But the legend then promptly gave the $50,000 reward which came with it to the Canada Council for the Arts as a generous donation.

Cohen mentioned the Canada Council for the Arts in a brief speech saying “without the help and encouragement of the Canada Council, I would never have written The Favorite Game or The Spice Box of Earth,” referring to early writing works.

He then said encouraging words to the musicians who were set to perform his songs that night.

Music icon and Hollywood legend Frank Sinatra died May 14, 1998. On the 14th anniversary of his death, his daughter singer Nancy Sinatra, launched an angry tirade against her stepmother for keeping her away from her late father’s deathbed. Well, well, well who would have thought Louis Walsh was a hero?

The X Factor judge played the knight in shining armour after Diego Bivero-Volpe was knocked unconscious outside an exclusive Mayfair Club.

Diego is set to be joining the show in the next few weeks, but you may remember his name as he once dated serial-dater on the show Kimberely Ganer.

Anyway when Diego came round, Louis called a taxi and accompanied him and a group of his mates home, as well as paying the £15 fare and a £5 tip.

The best bit about this story is that at the time Diego said he didn?t recognise Louis.

Speaking about the incident, Diego said: ?At 1am we decided to move on to another venue. We were by no means drunk,

?A car pulled up and the windows wound down and three men and the driver were shouting abusive language.

‘They were spitting from the window and being abusive, so I told them to stop being so rude.

?Then three of the men got out and started attacking us.

?Two of the men stood in front of me and one was behind me.

‘The two men at the front both punched me and I dodged one punch, but the other punch connected with my jaw. I was woozy from that when I felt what I assume was another fist at the back of my head by my ear which knocked me out completely.

?When I came round I was lying on the floor and Louis Walsh had come out of the club. He said, ?Are you OK? I saw the whole thing. This is the name, make and model of the car. I am so sorry you had to go through that.?

?He asked me if I needed to go to hospital.?

Oh good we were wondering if Louis had asked that. At that point the police were called but they said they wouldn?t be able to get there until 5am, so the group decided to leave and report the incident the following day.

Diego continued: ?Louis said he would get us a taxi. He was going to Kensington in West London, because he was staying in a hotel there, and we were going to Brompton, which is nearby, so we all got in one cab.

?In the taxi he was saying, ?I can?t believe it, they are animals. It?s the worst I?ve ever seen. Are you sure you?re OK??

?Then he asked me if I recognised him from TV.

?I don?t watch The X Factor so I said, ?No, I?m sorry, no I don?t.?

?Louis got out first and gave the driver a £20 note, even though the whole journey only cost £15, which was very generous of him.

?My friends told me later who he was and I just want to say thank you to Louis for being so kind.?

Speaking about the incident last night, Louis said: ?I did what any other person would have done and helped someone out who was in distress.?

Blimey Louis Walsh being modest? That?s quite a turn out for the books, what a guy.

It looks like Shona McGarty won’t be leaving Albert Square anytime soon as Eastenders bosses have dismissed claims that she is quitting the hit TV soap.

Earlier this week, it was indicated that the actress wants a break from her role as Whitney Dean to pursue a singing career.

The rumour mill was sent into overdrive when McGarty told the Daily Star newspaper: “I love Motown music and singing has always been a passion of mine. It’s a real dilemma as I love acting but I also want to sing. I want to do something with music.”

However, in a recent interview with Digital Spy an Eastenders representative confirmed that McGarty won’t be departing the show anytime soon saying: “There is absolutely no truth in the report that Shona has quit EastEnders.”

McGarty has been playing Whitney since 2008.

EastEnders star Jacqueline Jossa has revealed her dream is to work behind the bar of the Queen Vic pub in Albert Square.

The 19-year-old actress – who has been shortlisted for Sexiest Female at the National Soap Awards – plays teen alcoholic Lauren Branning and told The Sun that while she hopes Lauren sorts out her problems, she would love her to become a barmaid.

Jacqueline said: “I just want to work behind the bar in the Queen Vic once, then my life would be complete.”

The soap star said she can see herself staying in EastEnders for some time, and even hopes Lauren could notch up as many years as Dot Cotton, who has been in the show for 27 years.

Jacqueline said: “I still think there is so much that Lauren can do. She’s not finished so hopefully I’ll stay here for a little bit longer. Maybe I would like to be like Dot Cotton.

“I still love it, definitely. I have thought about making it in the movies, but I’m young so there is still time for that. I still have so much to learn here. It is like a college for me.”

Jacqueline admitted her Sexiest Female nomination had shocked her as Lauren’s storylines haven’t been sexy at all.

She said: “The other girls are all very, very sexy! How can I be up against Michelle Keegan? I don’t know how I am nominated, all I do is throw up!

Wainwright, now engaged to his boyfriend, wrote it prior to Barack Obama‘s election, but as we saw in North Carolina this past week, there are still many people — if not, now, the president — who feel that gay men and women will be damned for simply wanting to get married or have kids.

“So, how do I feel now? Well, once again we’re approaching an election year in the United States, and I’m getting ready to make that next commitment in terms of my relationship, in terms of getting married, and we’re at the outset of a child’s life,” Wainright told Spinner in an interview last month. “I don’t know. I’m worried to say that it’s positive; I would certainly say that the Republicans at this point are far less frightening than they were back in the Bush era. Following reports that she?d had been rushed to hospital with exhaustion earlier this week, Rihanna was back on the red (yes, it?s actually blue but you get what we mean) carpet last night in LA for the seemingly never-ending promotional trail for her film Battleship.

The singer Tweeted a snap of her arm with a IV drip in the other day shortly after her appearance at the annual NY Met Costume Gala. Subsequent rumours suggested that the star had ended up in hospital following weeks of hard work and hard partying.

But if Rihanna was still feeling the effects of exhaustion then she obviously hid it well with good make-up and, more importantly, a revealing outfit which drew attention away from her tired eyes. There?s nothing like a good bit of cleavage and leg on show to do that is there?

"Teen Mom" star Amber Portwood is back in an Indiana jail cell … after prosecutors claimed she LIED about having a medical condition to get out of her weekly drug court appointment. 

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … Portwood was a no-show at drug court last week … after telling officials she was on doctor-ordered bed rest following laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.  Our sources say Amber's attorney told the court she was ordered to remain in bed for 2-3 weeks. 

But here's the rub — we're told Amber's case manager didn't want to take Amber's word for it … and spoke to the doctor directly … who called B.S. on the reality star and insisted she WAS well enough to attend her court obligations. 

Amber was immediately hauled back to jail for missing the appointment — and we're told she's expected to stay behind bars for a couple of weeks … until a judge decides what to do with her.

Man, oh man! Just when you think that the old girl might not be what she used to be Grey’s Anatomy pulls out all of the stops and serves up a whopper like “Migration”.  Somehow managing to be both achingly poignant and uproariously funny, this episode evoked the past while envisioning the future and then kicked us in the stomach on its way out.

Decisions, Decisions

Much of this episode focused on the fallout from the board examinations and what fellowships our residents would be accepting…or not. Meredith wanted to stay in Seattle, despite promising offers for both her and Derek in Boston. And, true to form, she was basing her decision way too much on Cristina and not enough on her husband. Cristina, meanwhile, was considering offers from Columbia, Stanford, and the Mayo Clinic, while struggling to decide what way, if any, her relationship with Owen factored into the equation. Alex found himself as Top Dog, at long last, as he played SGMW and Johns Hopkins against each other in their efforts to recruit him. Seems he impressed his exam proctor after all. Jackson was being wooed by several programs as well but poor April, having failed her boards, had every one of her offers rescinded, even Seattle Grace!

It's been a long time since I've made one of these posts. Live gets crazy, shit gets in the way. Now as season 7 comes to a close we're faced with the reality that Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss) won't be returning for season 8. And of of course that makes us wonder who will be staying. Is anyone going to drop a bomb on us? 

Paget Brewster may be going but Criminal Minds' bosses are hopeful that Matthew Gray Gubler will stay for an eighth season.

Brewster – who plays Emily Prentiss – said on Twitter that deciding to leave the show was a "hard choice." She added: "I love everyone at CM and the fans! I just couldn't ignore my gut feeling. It's time for something new."

There had been huge controversy around the show when Brewster's character was seemingly killed-off during season six, but fans were delighted when she and co-star AJ Cook (who plays JJ Jarreau) returned.

As for Matthew Gray Gubler (who plays Reid), Criminal Minds' boss Erica Messer hopes that he'll re-sign. "All signs point to yes," she says, adding: "He's such a staple of the show. He really loves to play his sweet, vulnerable, smart Reid."

Messer reckons that "The big shocker was Paget [Brewster deciding to leave] . . . If Matthew was going in that direction, I think he's the kind of guy who would have said so."

The current seventh season of Criminal Minds resumes on Sky Living next Friday (May 11th) and begins soon on RTÉ Two.

So much happened on Thursday's Season 3 finale of "The Vampire Diaries," but we'll address most of it in a recap later on tonight. For right now, we need to talk about Elena's big choice between Stefan and Damon.

When faced with the choice of whether to say goodbye to Damon or to Stefan when their lives were on the line, Elena chose to

turn back to Stefan — weighing, of course, the fact that he was also with Caroline and Tyler, who could die. She admitted that had it been only Stefan or Damon, she would have chosen Stefan name of setting Damon free. “I care about you Damon,” she said. “Which is why i’ve got to let you go.”

It was based on some advice that her mother gave her years ago, when she was feeling distanced from Matt.

Of course, given the final moments of the finale — which revealed Elena to be in transition to being a vampire — it’s a sure thing that we’re going to see a very different side to her next season. And there’s a good chance it’s a side of her that wants a love that “consumes” her.

Movies such as Think Like A Man get a lot of media buzz from blogs or alternative media. I like movies such as Think Like A Man, but I also like independent films that take a risk to bring us stories not often seen. Without a big name producer like Tyler Perry or Oprah Winfrey, films like Precious would just go unnoticed. Pariah is one of those films which we featured on MrsGrapevine.com that didn’t receive the press it deserved. In order to have more diversity in black films, we have to support these independent films. With that said, I want to present this new film to you, Beasts of the Southern Wild, featuring new comer, Quvenzhané Wallis. Beasts of the Southern Wild  is already generating an Oscar buzz and is set to hit theaters June 27th. Not to mention, it was one of the crowd favorites at the Sundance Film Festival and will be featured at Cannes.

It’s hard to explain what the movie is about, so you will need to watch the trailer. The story takes place in the bayou around the time of a hurricane of biblical proportions kind of like Katrina. The film features a little heroine named Hushpuppy, who finds life in almost everything she sees, even in the midst of tragedy. It’s a message of hope through the eyes of a kid who stills sees the magic in life, even while the beasts of her life follow her around.

The movie is based on play by Lucy Alibar called Juicy & Delicious…

Frances Wood, Joelle Moses and Jaz Ellington have all been sick this week (we?re talking vomming a lot), which means they haven?t been able to rehearse as much as they hoped.

The news comes after reports that their mentor just hasn?t been there for them enough.

A source at the BBC said: ?Some of Will?s acts were furious that they hadn?t been given more contact with their coach,

“His acts have to contact him by Twitter if they need help, but there?s no telling where he might be.?

The spokesperson said: “We’re making sure the sick artists are getting all the rest and recuperation they need, and barring any further outbreaks, are confident they’ll all make it back for Saturday night’s show.?

We hope so too otherwise what on earth would happen on the show? It?s not worth thinking about. Simon Cowell, on the other, is probably thinking and praying about it a lot.

It seems like Alex Reid is still pretty peed off about that whole getting married to Katie Price thing.

Yup, that marriage certainly wasn?t what we would call ?ideal?.  Meanwhile it?s rumoured that his engagement to Chantelle is on the rocks and it probably doesn?t help that he?s swanning around the country stripping for WildBoyz and doing interviews about his ex-wife. Just a hunch.

LONDON (AP) — Johnny Depp's gothic comedy "Dark Shadows" is creeping into London for its European premiere.

The star joined director Tim Burton and co-stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green and Chloe Moretz on the red carpet in the British capital Wednesday night. The movie hits U.K. cinemas Friday.
 

For Depp, it was the eighth time he's teamed up with Burton, who keeps things "fresh." (AHAHAHAHAHA no.)

"It's always new, it's always different, so it feels like the first time every time," he said. "He just keeps getting better and better as a filmmaker and as an artist."

"Dark Shadows" is based on the American cult classic TV series. It centers on Barnabas Collins (Depp) — a wealthy man who is turned into a vampire by a witch (Green) and then buried alive. Some 200 years later he is unearthed by a construction crew and suddenly finds himself back in his insular Maine hometown in 1972.

A confused Barnabas discovers that his descendants have lost the wealth his family once had.

Pfeiffer said the film version is very different.

"Our movie isn't all that reflective really of the original series," she said. "It's more of an homage really, but Tim has a very distinct stamp on this and it's really more of a Tim Burton movie."

Burton was a huge fan of the TV show, which is why he jumped at the chance to adapt it for the big screen.

"It was a soap opera on in the day that had witches, ghosts and vampires, so it was a weird thing … especially at that time when there was not a lot of cable and stuff," he explained. "We'd run home from school and watch it and it was the combination of that it was just such a weird, serious supernatural soap opera that made it intriguing."

As with the TV show, Burton kept the story in the early 1970s, which meant the cast had to look the part.

For Pfeiffer, who plays Barnabas' descendant, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, embracing the fashion of the time was fun.

"I love the hair, the makeup, the shoes, I love all of it — for women," she said. "For men, I don't think it is a great period. It's not good for men."

But Bonham Carter, who stars as the family psychiatrist, wasn't as much of a fan of the 70s look, describing it as "not the most flattering era."

Sinead O’Connor‘s story took another turn this week when the singer posted a lengthy letter on her website describing her current mental condition, severing ties with her manager Fachtna O’Ceallaigh, acknowledging a suicide attempt on January 10, 2012, and saying that if she hadn’t cancelled her recent tour she’d have probably attempted suicide again.

Before O’Connor’s European tour was to commence, she says was prescribed a medication which can “make bipolar symptoms worse.”

“If I had not come home [cancelled the tour] there was a very high probability that I might have acted on a suicidal compulsion alone in some hotel room,” she says in the letter.

If you were to ask Brooklyn-based musician Doe Paoro to describe her music, she would respond “Ghost Soul.” Her music is wistful and wispy, and reminiscent of “a choir of ghosts who haven’t completely detached from the human experience.”

Her song “Born Whole” is just like that. It appears on her Slow to Love album, out now, and features drifting and plaintive vocals that oscillate between ethereal and soulful. “We come into being as complete people, but somewhere along the line start searching for this mythical other ‘half,’ as though we didn’t have everything we needed,” Paoro tells Spinner.
